Monarch Butterfly – One Day Tour

Enjoy One of the Most Amazing Natural Wonders at the Monarch Sanctuary

The monarch butterflies are amazing little creatures that travel over 4 thousand miles, from the Rocky Mountains in the US and Canada to the forests in Michoacán making them the longest animal migration in the continent.

We will be going through the forests of the Sanctuary learning about their journey, reproduction and life stages.

The clusters of butterflies come to life at noon and start flying from the trees surrounding you in a cloud of orange and black. We’ll have time to admire them and return with the sound of their wings in our soul.

Itinerary

  • Pick up starts at 08:30 from Hotel Mision Catedral localted in Morelia’s town center. Since we will be walking in the mountain it is suggested wearing very comfortable walking shoes, a warm jacket and bottled water (a refill is great, to avoid using unnecessary plastic). It is a 2.5 hrs drive from Morelia, during which I will talk to you about the migration, some stories, and the legend of this beautiful migration.
  • After arriving at the skirt of the mountain, we’ll have some time to adjust to the altitude, drink some water and get ready to walk. Depending on the season, we will hike approximately 1 km. You have the option of walking or hiring a horse to take you up.
  • Once we arrive to the clusters, we’ll have around 30 mins to be at the center of the butterflies’ home in silence and respecting this area.
  • After this wonderful experience, we’ll walk down to enjoy our lunch with local cuisine and head back to your hotel in Morelia, arriving approx. at 19:00 hrs.
