On this tour, you’ll immerse yourself in the local culture, encountering indigenous communities that continue to uphold their customs and traditions. You’ll also savor the delicious Michoacán cuisine that defines the region.

In addition to exploring Pátzcuaro, you’ll visit Janitzio, an island on Lake Pátzcuaro—an area rich in ancestral significance, known as the “Gateway to Heaven.” Here, you’ll discover why. You’ll also have the opportunity to explore a unique archaeological site, once home to one of the few pre-Hispanic empires in Mexico.

Itinerary

  • This day tour will last 8-9 hrs. Departing from Hotel Mision in Morelia at 10:00 am.
  • Our first stop will be Janitzio, we will take a boat from the pier and ride to the island where we’ll have time to see how the locals live, see the shops and walk all the way up to the Morelos Monument and take panoramic views of the lake.
  • Then we move on to Pátzcuaro city, where we’ll have a stroll around the town centre visiting the most iconic sites such as the Basílica, the most ambitious project for a basílica, even bigger than St Peter in Vatican City. La Casa de Los Once Patios (The house of Eleven Patios) where artisans have their workshops and you will see techniques such as the perfilado, plates decorated in natural tints and gold leaves.
  • Next, we will go to Tzintzuntzan the Purepecha Empire Capital, with its Archaeological site and church atrium, open chapel for natives and olive trees from 500 AD.
  • Finally, we will stop at Quiroga to taste the famous Carnitas, pork confit native to this area and a must! We’ll return to Morelia afterward.

Meeting Point Options: Pick-up is complimentary from Hotel Mision located in Morelia’s city centre. If your accommodation is outside this area, a convenient and easily accessible meeting point will be provided, this option will carry a fee.
