Santa Clara del Cobre is a Magic Town nestled in the hills of Michoacán and it is renowned for its amazing copper craftsmanship. This town, formally known as Villa Escalante, has a history of copperwork dating back over 500 years, with roots in the Purépecha indigenous culture. The Purépecha were known for their advanced metalwork techniques, this exceptional Magic Town draws tourists and copper enthusiasts from around the world who come to admire and purchase the fine copper pieces crafted here.
When visiting this Town, make sure you visit the Quiosco and head to the shops on Pino Suarez st., where artisans create everything from decorative vases and plates to intricate jewelry and household items, there you can find some really nice quality pieces. Copper craftsmanship in Santa Clara del Cobre is not just a livelihood for the locals, it is a cultural heritage passed down through generations and often you will visit small workshops hundreds of years old.
Artisans use both traditional and modern techniques, working with hammers, anvils, and fire to shape and polish the copper into amazing articles. The town hosts its own annual Copper Fair, or Feria Nacional del Cobre, every August, showcasing competitions in copper artistry, demonstrations, and exhibitions of locally crafted pieces. This fair is more than just selling products, it honours the town’s heritage and provides a platform for local artisans to gain recognition and share their skills with a broader audience.
Santa Clara del Cobre boasts a warm, welcoming atmosphere that reflects its small-town roots. The town is surrounded by scenic landscapes, pine forests, and is near Lake Zirahuén, offering picturesque views and opportunities for outdoor activities. The main square, adorned with a copper fountain, is a popular gathering spot, I thoroughly recommend stopping there to take in some of the architecture and to experience the calm ambiance. Santa Clara del Cobre stands out as a place where history, art, and nature converge, making it an ideal destination for anyone interested in Mexico’s rich craft traditions and natural beauty.
This town is only about 20 minutes from Patzcuaro, and about 1hr and 15min from Morelia, do contact me to visit this great place, it is most definately worth the visit.
